What is ADBDP?

Why?
L'Association des Directeurs des Bibliothèques Départementales de Prêt (ADBDP), created in November 1987, came into being from the need to create a vehicle of dialogue for the Directors of Regional Libraries (BDP), when, from January 1, 1986, the BDP had been placed under the authority of the County Councils of Departments.

Who?
The ADBDP brings together three quarters of the 96 directors. The activities offered allow its members to deal with the organization of a public reading service and a regionally networked documentation service at a time when a considerable number of very different program choices are available.

What?
The ADBDP developed its agenda according to a number of possible directions:

  • reflection: in the framework of the Annual Study Days is devoted to a theme. It gives participants the opportunity to take stock of general directions, to touch on local experiences, and to meet and get together!
  • information: with an occasional bulletin, Tranversales; an original system of phone surveys; the Guide of the BDP; other numerous publications; and, since 1998, a web site.
  • the establishing of the ADBDP as an intermediary for problems shared among BDPs.
  • the opening to foreign experiences (Denmark, Quebec, Sweden, the Valle d'Aosta, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Finland), and exchanges with libraries which are network heads.
  • the participation in national debates on topical problems such as lending rights and library law.
  • recognition of the BDP's uniqueness, and defence of professional personnel standards, especially at the directorial level.

How?
All 18 members of the Board of Directors are involved in the Association's operations.

Funding comes from the Association's members as well as from services offered and products distributed.

La Direction du Livre et de la Lecture (Office of Books and Libraries of the French Ministry of Culture) has financially supported the ADBDP since its founding, and has become its representative for a certain number of areas.
